Explore an incredible wilderness setting on a classic route with our naturalists and learn about the rich flora, fauna, and geology while avoiding crowds. One of the safest ways to experience the wonders of the park is to hit the trail and stay outdoors! Yellowstone Wolf Tracker guides are backpacking experts who have guest safety foremost in mind. Travel with them to Yellowstone's most remote settings for an unforgettable wildlife and wilderness experience.

Lamar Valley and Pelican Valley are renowned for their wildlife sightings. Grizzly bears, wolves, moose, and herds of elk and bison will likely be encountered throughout this challenging route. The trek includes some long days with moderate elevation gain through very scenic grassland, forest, and alpine areas.

Our treks are true wilderness treks, or SLEEP ON THE GROUND, WALK IN THE RAIN. The Valley to Valley Trek is a challenging route for fit and experienced backpackers, equipped with their own reliable gear. A list of suggested items will be furnished and please inquire about options for borrowing gear.

The program fee includes backcountry reservation permits, a shuttle to the trailhead, and all meals on the trail (simple but wholesome). Our cancellation policy for our treks is amended to be NO RISK. If you need to cancel prior to the start of the trek, for any reason, a full refund will be given. Best of all, the trek is led by our Certified Interpretive Guide staff, bringing years of outdoor skill to enrich your wilderness experience.

Meet the guides at the Pelican Valley trailhead at a designated morning time. The initial route is 6 miles through open grasslands dotted with bison herds. The sweeping views of Lamar Valley and possible wildlife sightings make this approach one of the better ones.

After fording Cache Creek the route passes through post-1988 fire regrowth to a secluded camp in the forest along the Lamar River. If conditions allow, a campfire will afford some warmth and conversation into the evening at this site, as well as, both nights to come.

A gradual climb of 10 miles covers a winding route with several creek crossings to the upper Lamar River basin. A camp along Little Saddle Creek is near the crossroads of several trails over the crest of the Absaroka Range where Castor and Pollux Peaks dominate the skyline. This is one of the most remote regions of the park.

August 24, 2020

A moderate 7-mile ascent of the Mist Creek trail leads to high meadows near the creek's headwaters. Views of Pyramid Peak along the route are astounding. The lush meadows at the base of the pass are a pleasing place for a final campsite and rest for the Pelican Valley day ahead.

August 25, 2020

The last day may prove to be the most memorable, because after ascending to the top of Mist Creek Pass, the views of Pelican Valley and Yellowstone Lake are well-worth the effort. Additionally, the trail continues descending through open forest and regrowth to the floor of Pelican Valley. The final 7 miles of this 11-mile day wind through the grassy hills and open creek bottoms of the Pelican Valley, a wildlife haven known for its bison herds, grizzly bears, and many raptors soaring overhead. The trailhead awaits after a final push through flat, forested areas to the shores of Yellowstone Lake where your vehicle awaits.
