The pack comes together and begins to howl.   Howling is a ceremonious ritual that reinforces unity within the pack. In the winter, wolves may howl 2-3 times per day, particularly around dawn and dusk. They often howl to locate one another when separated

After the wolves howl, they travel out of sight.   This gives the biologist the opportunity to go to the site of the carcass to investigate.
