Paw Prints

I see a part of you
etched in the summer sand.

A fleeting moment of your life
forever frozen in time.

I see you running across the valley
I hear you howling in the hills.

For you are home at last
and your spirit is free.

The mountains rise around you
as you run along the river,

unknowingly leaving behind
a paw print for my soul.

By Bridget Lyons

** inspired from an afternoon spent looking for wolf tracks and making plaster castings of the prints in Yellowstone.

Mighty Wolf

Thank you Mother Earth
for creating the mighty wolf
who runs so gracefully
through your grasses and
dances in the sunshine.

Thank you Mother Earth
for creating the mighty wolf
whose pups roll on a green hillside
and frolic in the red Paintbrush.

Thank you Mother Earth
for creating the mighty wolf
whose yellow eyes hold secrets
and howls tell no lies.

Thank you Mother Earth
for creating the mighty wolf
whose spirit is so free
as he journeys beneath your starlit skies.

Thank you Mother Earth
for creating the mighty wolf
who silently moves among the aspen
as their leaves rustle in the wind.

Thank you Mother Earth
for creating the mighty wolf
and giving me this day
to be like the wolf
to play in the sun
and let my spirit be free.

** Inspired by wolf watching with a Yellowstone Association Institute course

Bridget Lyons is an elementary music teacher from River Falls, Wisconsin, and had her first experience with the Yellowstone wolves with the Yellowstone Institute, a wolf class taught by Jim Halfpenny and Jim Garry. Every evening and early morning was spent watching the Druid Peak Pack, she even got a glimpse of the pups.  Although this was her 7th visit to Yellowstone, it was her first wolf experience. She had been active with wolf recovery issues, donating to Defenders Of Wildlife and signing petitions to restore wolves to Yellowstone National Park.  She was thrilled to actually see them in their new home, just being wolves.
